Project 365: February 28, 2013

2.28.13

My prompt today was “upside down”. It took quite a long time to get exactly what I wanted. I started with some pretty predictable shots, but didn’t feel quite right about it. Next, I put the camera on the ground, facing the ceiling, and held the baby over the camera (this is not for the faint of heart with a drooling baby!). It took several tries to get the right settings and, since our apartment has horrible lighting, I *gasp* had to use my flash. I hate the flash and avoid it at all costs, but it was a necessity today. The last picture I included is the exact type of photo I had hoped to capture; I’m so mad it’s not in focus!

This might be my favorite photo yet. I think it captures real life and tells a story of my days. I love a good book and miss my days dancing in London, but other adventures in life have left my shelves dusty. I left my 50 mm on and turned the aperture to 1.8mm. I am obsessed with one of the Pioneer Woman’s actions (found on Pinterest) and it definitely added depth to this photo.

I don’t know what came over me, but I thought a picture of sewing machine was exactly what the day needed. I love how the editing made this photo intense and serene all at the same time. I’m currently working on a nautical quilt for my son’s room – I promise to post a picture when it’s done!!

I’ve been wanting to take some pictures of the boy on the changing table for awhile. He is always so happy there! I didn’t quite get what I had expected or hoped for since he was pretty mellow today, but I still think what I got is cute enough. I never did any detail pictures when he was a newborn, so it’s fun to still be able to document his little hands and those long “finger toes”!

2.24.13

I had some fun with Photoshop today! My daily photo theme was “a cloud”. Unfortunately, the only wispy cloud anywhere was over Mt Charleston and not very interesting looking. So, I removed the color from the background of the image and added contract. I tried to darken it a bit, but the brushes weren’t working for some reason. I ran the HDR action on the foreground and lightened it a bit. I think it’s a subtle, but unsettling result.

Today’s challenge for the Fat Mum Slim Photo A Day project was “a word”. I had no clue what to take a picture of and the little man just happened to be in his swing, so I tried capturing the “Fischer Price” label. At first I tried a predictable shot where the beginning of the word was in focus and it blurred out further from the camera, but then I decided I wanted to take a picture that captured what I think of the Fischer Price brand. I think if I saw this photo without the Fischer Price label, I would still know it had something to do with a Fischer Price type brand.

I had a hair cut and got new glasses today, so I attempted my first self portrait. It took awhile (good thing the baby was content in his swing!), but I’m fairly pleased with how it turned out. I may even use it as my picture on the blog.

Project 365: February 21, 2013

I have finally decided to start a Project 365 journal. Basically, it means I will work to take at least one picture a day in order to chronicle our year as well as improve my photography. Here’s my very first entry…

…since we got our new assignment from the Air Force, I just had to celebrate. Oatmeal, chocolate, cranberry cookie goodness.

Quietude Quilts | Southern Maryland Infant Photography

Our good friends are the owners of Quietude Quilts. They hand-make gorgeous little beds and quilts for photography as well as for dolls (they are ranked as one of the top shops in their category on Etsy!). It’s taken me four months, but I’ve finally been able to take some photos of the Little Monkey and his QQ bed!

The little blue quilt was custom made for Caleb to match his blue, green, and white room.
